We are called to defend the faith from false doctrine but some have taken that to mean defending their stance on non-cardinal doctrines with a fever, causing unneeded division in the body.

The difficult part comes in discerning which doctrines are cardinal vs non-cardinal. The argument often arises because to one person it’s a non-cardinal issue, but to the other it’s completely crucial. It gets even tougher when you have an actual cardinal issue’ but two irreconcilable and seemingly valid points (IE Calvin vs Arminian). On the one hand we need to believe and seek out the truth, but on the other hand you have people from both sides of the camp yelling at the other one “HERETIC!” The question then becomes – at which point am I saved because I believe the correct thing vs we’re saved by faith in the person of Christ. Sound doctrine is incredibly important, but a lot of these issues can send people scrambling to have faith in doctrine, instead of in Christ the person Himself. Grace in all things I believe is the key as well, extending EVEN to disagreements on cardinal issues!
